“Best overlanding app” is a hard question to answer honestly, because there isn’t one app that does everything. Navigation, trip logging, and gear management are three different problems, and most overlanding apps only solve one of them well. Here’s how I’d break down the category, and where the real gap is.
Navigation & Trail Data
This is the most mature part of the category. Apps built around offline topo maps, trail databases, and GPX tracking exist to get you from point A to point B off-pavement, with crowd-sourced trail data layered in. If you’re routing a trip, this is the tool you open first — and it’s not a category Rig-Locker competes in or tries to replace.
Trip Logging & Community
A second category focuses on logging trips, sharing routes, and building a community around where people have been. Good for trip inspiration and route discovery. Not built to tell you anything about what’s actually loaded in your vehicle.
Payload & Gear Management
This is the category most overlanding apps skip entirely, and it’s the one I built Rig-Locker for. Navigation apps tell you where to go. None of them tell you whether your rig is over its GVWR, where your center of gravity sits once it’s loaded, or what’s actually packed versus what you think you packed.
